Veils of Tradition and Truth

Lumindra's steps faltered as she drew near the audience chamber, the murmur of voices halting her advance. Hidden in the shadows, she observed Perand conversing quietly with his companion, Keryk, a well-known cultivator and former Pure Fist Champion.

"I'm truly worried she'll judge me by my father's legacy," Perand confessed, his voice laced with a vulnerability Lumindra hadn't expected. "I want her to see me, not the shadow of Tyrant King Vorand."

Keryk offered a reassuring smile. "Then just be yourself. Your actions speak volumes more than your lineage ever could. You should let her know that."

A laugh escaped Perand, breaking the tension. "Keryk, boasting about my deeds isn't exactly my style, you know that."

Lumindra's heart skipped. She hadn't anticipated this side of Perand, and silently, she retreated to the appointed room, her thoughts a whirlwind.

As Perand and Keryk entered, introductions were swiftly exchanged, the formality of the moment doing little to ease Lumindra's reservations. However, when Perand suggested they speak privately, Lumindra found herself nodding in agreement, curiosity piqued.

Once secluded, Perand wasted no time in addressing the elephant in the room. "I want to apologize for the position you're being put in, marrying me. I know my father's reputation has cast a long shadow, but I am not him. I'll do everything to earn your trust, however long it takes."

Lumindra, taken aback by his candor, found her voice. "I... appreciate your honesty. It's just hard to separate you from him, given how large that shadow is."

Perand nodded, understanding. "I know. And I wouldn't ask you to take my word for it blindly. But maybe, with time, you'll see the truth of who I am."

“I can’t promise you anything in this position I’ve been put in.”

Perand hesitated, the weight of his next words pressing heavily between them. "Lady Lumindra, I must confess, I had no say in this marriage. Truth be told, I haven't spoken to my father in years."

The admission hung in the air, stark and revealing. Before Lumindra could process this revelation, Perand added, "But I must say, I consider myself fortunate. My future wife is so incredibly beautiful." The words escaped him softly, tinged with a sincerity that sent a flush of warmth across both their cheeks.

Lumindra, caught off guard by the compliment and the sudden warmth in her cheeks, found herself at a loss for words. Perand, noticing her reaction, quickly added, "Of course, that's only if you'll have me. If you're truly opposed to this marriage, I'll refuse it. It will undoubtedly cause issues on my end, but that's a burden I'm willing to bear. After all, my father did send me away to another kingdom."

These words stirred something in Lumindra. Would he really call off the marriage if she wished it? Could he? The thought flickered through her mind, tempting yet fraught with implications. She had always known that her status as the Matriarch's daughter might culminate in an arranged marriage. Rejecting three previous proposals had pushed her mother's patience to its
